Under the pseudonym Jeffery Hudson, Crichton spins a medical thriller about a young Boston blue blood who dies from complications following an illegal abortion in the era before Roe versus Wade. "A Case of Need" is enriched with footnotes explaining medical terminology and concerns as well as appendices voicing Crichton's opinions on the medical issues of the time.
