A novel, set on the Rio Grande in New Mexico, about a disparate community of troubled souls. Gay Schaefer is separated from her husband of 15 years, but she continues to meet him secretly in motel rooms on a regular basis, while pretending to her daughter, Rita, that they are divorced. Rita, now in high school, is becoming aware of some strange force at play in town, some dread that haunts the lives of her neighbors, the Calzados, whose daughter, Cecilia, is Rita's best friend and whose son, Enrique, begins to date Rita, and to which Rita find herself increasingly drawn.

Publisher Notes
"A smart, sensitive, unforgettable novel.... Rare is the contemporary novel that simultaneously entertains [and] unselfconsciously inspires. Beyond even these noteworthy accomplishments, American Owned Love translates qualities usually impossible to describe, the ineffable, luminous, mutating qualities of love."
Media Reviews
"Splendid work, from a novelist who keeps getting better and better."
First Line
Even asleep, Rita Schaefer heard her mother advancing.
