In a novel suffused with references to classical music, particularly the string quartet repertoire, Michael (a violinist) and Julia (a pianist) have a passionate youthful affair that ends badly. They meet again 10 years later--a reunion that is made more poignant because Julia has a physical problem that may affect her playing. She is also married, with a son. Michael's love for Julia is a vital part of this novel, but so are his relationships with the other three vividly described members of the Maggiore Quartet.
