Publisher Notes
The vividly illustrated memoirs of a spirited pioneer doctor - Dr. Mary Canaga Rowland - who grew up & studied medicine on the Great Plains after the Civil War. During childhood, her interest in human anatomy was ignited when she witnessed an autopsy as a girl in 1870s Nebraska. One of the first women to obtain a medical degree in the United States, she worked hard to establish a practice in a male-dominated profession. Her story includes patient studies & an investigation into her husband's death, a Kansas doctor who encouraged her to study medicine but was murdered a few years after they were married. Descriptions of straggling buffalo herds, wagon trains, & Indian lives provide a haunting backdrop to a career which included an appointment as an Indian school physician. These are rare memoirs, illustrated with over 35 historical maps & photographs. They are filled with surprise & humor.
