Freyd proposes the theory that any childhood trauma, but especially sexual abuse, is likely to become a repressed memory when the trauma involves a betrayal committed by trusted individuals such as parents or other figures in positions of authority. This is an adaptive survival mechanism allowing an individual psyche to continue intact, and Freyd rejects the view that memory repression is impossible or implausible.
