Henry Huggins

Henry Huggins Henry and Beezus Henry and the Paper Route Henry and Ribsy/Boxed

by Beverly Cleary

Review this book!

Henry Huggins is a third grader whose life changes when he adopts a hungry stray dog whom he names Ribsy. This is the first book about the children who live on Klickitat Street in Portland, Oregon--the childhood neighborhood of author Beverly Cleary. Originally published in 1950, HENRY HUGGINS reflects a more innocent time in American history. Henry and his friends are free to roam their neighborhood, getting into such adventures as entering their dogs in a pet show, raising guppies, digging up worms for a fishing trip, and participating in the school Christmas pageant. Occasional B&W line drawings accompany the text.

Media Reviews

"We defy anyone under 70 not to chuckle over it. The humor is so much a part of the story that it is difficult to define."

Synopses

When Henry adopts Ribsy, a dog of no particular breed, humorous adventures follow.

First Line

Henry Huggins was in the third grade. His hair looked like a scrubbing brush and most of his grown-up front teeth were in. He lived with his mother and father in a square white house on Klickitat Street.
