In the Heart of the Country

Review this book!
IN THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY is set on a remote farm in South Africa. The protagonist is a bitter and intelligent woman who is ignored by her father, and scorned and feared by her father's servants. Her outward meekness cloaks a desperate resolve to not become "one of the forgotten ones of history." When her father takes an African mistress, that resolve precipitates an act of vengeance that suggests a chemical reaction between the colonizer and colonized--and between European sensibility and the vastness and solitude of Africa.
