Published in 1832, George Sand's first novel written without the collaboration of Sandeau is the wildly romantic tale of Indiana Delmare, a beautiful Creole girl unhappily wed to a brutal older man. In her rebellion against her fate, she unwisely pursues and falls in love with a fashionable rake who has already seduced Indiana's own maid. The novel argues, however, that this perilous venture toward true womanhood, mistakes and all, must be risked if a woman can ever hope to be an equal partner in love with her husband.
