A timeless classic based on a true story, this 1961 Newbery Medal-winner tells the story of a young Indian girl, Karana, as she struggles with the experience of living completely alone on a tiny island in the Pacific. Due to a series of misfortunes, when Karana's tribe leaves their beautiful island to escape marauding Russian fishermen, she stays behind, at the mercy of wild dogs and the elements. Karana must figure out how to care for herself, including making weapons--traditionally men's work. With only a dog and the surrounding wildlife for company, Karana spends 18 years relying on her strengths and finding contentedness on her quiet island.

Media Reviews
"A haunting and unusual story based on the fact that in the early 1800s an Indian girl spent 18 years alone on a rocky island far off the coast of California...A quiet acceptance of fate characterizes her ordeal."
Synopses
Left alone on a beautiful but isolated island off the coast of California, a young Indian girl spends eighteen years, not only merely surviving through her enormous courage and self-reliance, but also finding a measure of happiness in her solitary life.
First Line
I remember the day the Aleut ship came to our island. At first it seemed like a small shell afloat on the sea. Then it grew larger and was a gull with folded wings. At last in the rising sun it became what it really was--a red ship with two red sails.
