Adelita
This Mexican version of the Cinderella story differs from most other takes on the tale in that it features no magical elements--no mice are turned into coachmen nor is any pumpkin turned into a coach. Here the traditional "fairy godmother" is a faithful servant and it is a beautifully decorated shawl, rather than a glass slipper, that leads the "prince" (a kind young man named Javier) back to his "Cinderella" (the beautiful and sweet Adelita). Some traditional elements remain--such as the characters of the evil stepmother and cruel stepsisters, but at the end of the story, Adelita makes her peace with them and even invites them to her wedding. Acrylic paintings, featuring borders of Mexican-style tile, accompany the text.
