Marcus Didius Falco, part-time private eye has been retained to check out an eastern province, Nabatea, that the Emperor is considering annexing. While traversing the terrain, Falco and his lover Helena stumble upon an acting troupe whose playwright, Chremes, whose dead body was discovered stuffed in a cistern by a murderer. The troupe is headed in their direction, so Falco and Helena decide to take Chremes' place and look for the murderer.
