Following the death of a crewmate and irreparable damage to their craft, the survivors of an ill-fated Mars expedition decide to scrap the mission and trek across the hostile surface of Mars towards the planet's north pole, where they hope to be able to adapt an abandoned ship from a previous landing. The problem is that not all of them will fit in the second ship, and as they begin their journey, one by one the remaining crew perish under highly suspicious circumstances.

Publisher Notes
With international interest in manned Mars exploration on the decline, after two disastrous, unsuccessful expeditions, a third expedition ventures to the "Red Planet," but from the moment of landing, everything begins to go wrong, and the astronauts' only hope of survival lies in a perilous journey across the surface of Mars. A first novel.
Media Reviews
"Landis gives us a picture of Mars that rivals Kim Stanley Robinson's for realistic texture and intensity of sensation (if not for multivolume expansiveness). The trek is much too strenuous to qualify as a tourist excursion (or even an adventure vacation), but its a trip worth taking, especially with such a sharp-eyed and articulate guide."
First Line
DON QUIJOTE approached Mars in perfect silence.
