Excerpt
Index funds will only do as well as the specific benchmark they are designed to mimic. Most people intuitively understand the upside of this approach: if the S&P 500 is up 10 percent, then their S&P Index fund will be up 10 percent as well (minus expenses). But many people forget about the downside. The index will track--on a percentage by percentage basis--any loss as well. So if the S&P 500 is down 12 percent for the year, the index fund will also fall by that amount. That is a risk you take with a passively managed fund. An actively managed fund might give you some protection in a down market.
