Noah Krainkik is a teenager whose father has moved him, his cousin Charlotte, and his mother Mina to the Arctic. His father, frequently gone from home, leaves them with a short-wave radio by which Noah communicates with the nearby village of Quill, where Noah spends his summers. Via the radio, he learns of the death of his friend Pelly; Mina and Charlotte leave the wilderness for Toronto, where Mina runs a movie theater called Northern Lights. Noah, in mourning for Pelly, eventually leaves the Arctic as well, and joins Mina in Toronto.
