This book is the culmination of Wilson Alwyn Bentley's work, begun in 1885 in Jericho, Vermont, of photographing snowflakes through a microscope. Some 2500 photographs are reproduced in this volume, attesting both to the beauty and seemingly endless variety of Bently's chosen obsession.

S. F. Spira is the founder of Spiratone, which manufactures various gadgets used by photographers. He was also a collector of antique photography equipment. Many of the photographs that illustrate this book are from his collection, as part of a chronicle of the history of photography in terms of the equipment that has been used to produce it.
