This is the fifth in the six-book Bedwyn series, each of which stars one of the six siblings of a Regency-era noble English family. Diplomat Alleyne Bedwyn, wounded during the Battle of Waterloo and suffering from amnesia, is nursed back to health by Rachel York, a young woman forced by circumstance to live in a Brussels brothel. She and her benefactors--the four Englishwomen who run the brothel--have been swindled out of their savings. Their only hope of financial salvation is an inheritance due to Rachel when she weds. Alleyne pretends to be Rachel's husband so that she can claim the money, and, of course, their sham union gradually becomes a true one.
