The Children Of The Company
by Kage Baker
Review this book!
This is the sixth in a seven-book science fiction series concerning the conspiracies woven around a 24th-century corporation called Dr. Zeus. Dr. Zeus, aka the Company, uses time travel to rescue orphans in the past, transform them into immortal cyborgs, and program them to preserve valuable cultural and scientific treasures throughout history that can be picked up in the future and sold at a high profit. Previous volumes have slowly revealed that the true masters of the Company are the immortal beings presumed to be its servants. THE CHILDREN OF THE COMPANY focuses on these masters through a series of anecdotes (previously published as individual stories) that document the power struggles among various immortal cabals to gain control over the Company and the future of mortal history. Along the way, the answers to many of the series' mysteries are answered (What happened to Budu during the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake? Why does Victor always wear gloves? And where is Nan D'Arraignee's beloved husband Kalugin?).

First Line
The man has an air of authority. Dignity, too. Gravity, integrity, and all you'd want to see in the face of a judge. He is a consummate actor.
