Jonathan Toomey is the best woodcarver in the valley, but he is not a happy man. Still silently mourning the death of his wife and child, he keeps to himself and doesn't let his new neighbors know about the tragedy in his past. One winter day a widow hires Jonathan to carve a new creche for Christmas and asks if he would allow her son to watch him work. As Jonathan carves, he gets to know the boy and the widow, and once again his heart begins to fill with joy.
