The Damnation of Theron Ware
by Harold Frederic
Review this book!
Reverend Theron Ware, a Methodist Episcopal minister in upstate New York, must examine his faith and his life as he comes in contact with a dizzying variety of people and ideas. Joyce Carol Oates, in her essay in the December 17, 1995, issue of the New York Times Book Review, noted that this book was the inspiration for Sinclair Lewis's MAIN STREET and ELMER GANTRY.

Media Reviews
"I had not read THERON WARE in more than twenty years, and, taking it up again recently, with only a blurred memory of the tragicomic odyssey of its feckless hero, I wasn't quite prepared for the novel's warm, intelligent good humor, its complex and ambiguous story, its shrewd, disturbing insights into the human psyche. and what an inspired ending, with a special significance for the present time--when, as a phrase from the book would have it, 'talk is what tells' in our national politics, as in the more manipulative quarters of populist religion."
