A failed writer named Terry, the victim of a sleep disorder, turns up at a sleep clinic run by Gregory, whom he knew in college. Past and present intertwine as Sarah, one of Gregory's old girlfriends, surfaces, as does another student from the group, Robert, with whom Sarah is still in love. The plot is made more complex by the fact that Gregory's real aim in running the clinic is to teach humans to do without sleep entirely, an obsession that leads him to experiment on his patients. A "New York Times" Notable Book for 1998.

Publisher Notes
Like a surreal and highly caffeinated version of "The Big Chill", Coe's new novel brings together four students who first meet in college in the '80s. A decade later, they are haunted by sleep, or the lack of it, and reunite at a clinic for sleep disorders.
Media Reviews
"An audacious, often wickedly funny meditation on the vexed precincts of sleep and sex....[A] droll, ingenious novel, its satire nicely leavened by true romance."
