The narrator of this novel, Clyde, is a gay man living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who hates his job and has lost his lover to yuppie materialism. Louise, a college friend of his, arrives to stay with him--along with her teenage son Ben, and their dog. Clyde's housemate, Marcus, discovers that he is Ben's father, and Clyde has to persuade Marcus to tell Ben. Meanwhile, Clyde is busy with his sister Agnes, who is divorced and beleaguered by their invalid father and her own rebellious daughter.

Publisher Notes

Clyde spends far too much time obsessing over his ex, Gordon, and dodging his family, and may well be on the verge of becoming as aimless as his handsome, straight roommate, Marcus. When Marcus' old lover, Louise, shows up with her son, the looming question of the boy's paternity is just what's needed to turn up the heat and give full comic play to McCauley's anxious, affectionate, and ongoing fascination with what makes a family--and what makes us friends.

Media Reviews

"A lovely, funny book that represents an impressive strengthening of McCauley's themes and talent. Without losing his refreshingly frank voice or off-center characters, he's created a lament for the way a winner-take-all society can distort and impoverish the fates of real people trying to break the downward trajectory of their lives."
