The Stories of John Cheever

by John Cheever

Review this book!

To read all of these stories in three or four sittings is to enter a world of lush lawns and swimming pools, martinis and backyard barbecues, the alienation of living in a big city, the anxiety of being surrounded by those whom you hope you resemble. Here Cheever captures the essence of urbanity and suburbanness, the angst of the station wagon, the paradox of loneliness inherent in being surrounded by people. Also included in this collection are Cheever's stories of Italy.

Publisher Notes

Winner of the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
THE STORIES OF JOHN CHEEVER live in the community of emotions and dreams. The men and women are creatures of beauty, tragedy and restless privilege. And always they soar from the sadness of life to the older and more elegant realms of light, desire, memory, and love....
"Dazzling."
THE BOSTON GLOBE

Media Reviews

"These stories seem at times to be stories of a long-lost world when the city of New York was still filled with a river light, when you heard the Benny Goodman quartets from a radio in the corner stationary store, and when almost everybody wore a hat....Any precise documentation of one's immaturity is embarrassing, and this I find from time to time in the stories, but this embarrassment is redeemed for me by the memories the stories hold for me of the women and men I have loved and the rooms and corridors and beaches where the stories were written. My favorite stories are those that were written in less than a week and that were often composed aloud."
