An early novel of Greene's, lost for nearly 40 years and only published in 1985. Set in France during the Nazi occupation of the early 1940s, it tells the story the wealthy lawyer Chavel, who is imprisoned and selected randomly to die in retaliation for the murder of a German officer by the French Resistance. He promises his entire fortune to anyone who will take his place, and his offer is taken up by Charlot, a young man who wants to leave the estate to his family. After he is liberated, Chavel returns to his house, now owned by Charlot's mother, and takes a job as caretaker without disclosing his true identity. He falls in love with Charlot's sister but is forced to reveal himself when an imposter arrives and tries to pass himself off as Chavel.
