Something of a modern classic, this is the story of T. S. Garp, who is raised by his eccentric feminist mother and spends most of his life surrounded and preoccupied by woman. Irving depicts Garp's pursuit of a writing career against the backdrop of the odd assortment of characters in his life--wrestlers, radical feminists, transsexuals, and rape protesters. Part fictional biography, part examination of the writing life, and part meditation on modern American society gone amok.

Media Reviews
"...the most powerful and profound novel about women written by a man in our generation....[L]ike all extraordinary books, 'Garp' defies synopsis."
Excerpt
Garp found that he COULD forget her; lust, as his mother called it, was tricky that way. And time, he discovered had softened his dislike of Wanga's mayonnaise-jar lip; suddenly, he liked it. And so he had HER, twice, and as he would learn all his life, nearly everything seems a letdown after a writer has finished writing something.

"This is the best book I have ever read!! If you want a story about the 70's this is one, full of symoblism and underlying truths and tragedy. The "undertoad" You may not always see it but its always there, and we all have those "undertoads" in our life. This book is full complete, from beginning to end, the end will not leave you questioning "what was Irving thinking?" He completed this book and didn't shirk on the details, its phenomonal!"
