This novel by a short-story writer is a collection of fragmented, storylike chapters about two brothers, Troy and Jonah, who have grown up without knowing each other--Troy is given up for adoption by his teenage mother, who later gives birth to Jonah. As Jonah gets older, he seeks out Troy, learning that he has been arrested for drug possession--and Troy finds himself being helped out of a bad situation by a brother he never knew he had. Dan Chaon grew up in western Nebraska; his novel takes place in a South Dakota community. Chaon's feeling for the Great Plains region, with its huge distances and its struggling small towns, permeates the book.
