Crazy As We Are Crazy As We Are Selected Rubais from Divan-Kebir by Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, Jalal Al-Din Rumi, Nevit Oguz Ergin ( 1992)
This book is a collection of 128 previously untranslated rubais, or quatrains (four line poems which express one complete idea), of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi (1184 - 1273 A.D.) one of the greatest mystics of all time. As a respected scholar of his day Rumi's world was turned upside-down upon meeting the "Beloved" in the form of a wandering Dervish beggar, Shems of Tebriz. When the scholar's students, jealous of their master's new attachment to the beggar, murdered Shems, Rumi went mad. He whirled in pain driving himself beyond into ecstasy. In the midst of his whirling dance he spoke the thousands of lines that have come down to us as his poetry. "Crazy As We Are" comes from the second volume of the Divan-i Kebir (a compilation of 44,834 verses with 1764 rubais) written in 1368. As the translator, Dr. Nevit O. Ergin, explains in his introduction, "Mevlana cannot be contained in any number of volumes. My humble contribution is just a glimpse of this unmatched treasure." The United Nations has designated 1993 as "The year of Mevlana" & that will mean a world-wide focus of attention on this great poet's contribution to poetry & religious thought.

In the seven centuries since the death of Jelaluddin Rumi in 1273, the world has come to know and thrill to his sacred poetry. In concert with the tabla and sitar, his writing is part of a religious tradition that is believed to excite "spiritual heroism," embracing the holiness of love, lamentation, battle, and the longing for God. RUMI: VOICE OF LONGING collects nearly one hundred of Rumi's most memorable quatrains, presented here on two superbly remastered CD recordings for the first time ever. Translated and performed by the Rumi scholar Coleman Barks, these works echo with a spiritual complexity that defies their outward simplicity. As Sufism acknowledges the truth of other religions, so does Rumi's poetry reflect universal themes: the search for the highest truth, the mystery of surrender, the longing to overcome ego imprisonment. RUMI: VOICE OF LONGING captures the silence, the love, and the playfulness that make each experience with this work one of sacred wonder.

The Soul of Rumi The Soul of Rumi A New Collection of Ecstatic Poems by Coleman Barks, John Moyne, Jalal Al-Din Rumi ( 2002)

"Inside a lover's heart there's another world, and yet another."

Rumi's delightful yet profound poems have inspired countless people throughout the centuries, and Coleman Barks's exquisite renderings of the thirteenth-century Persian mystic are widely considered the definitive versions for our time. Barks's translations capture the inward exploration and intensity that characterize Rumi's poetry, making this unique voice of mysticism and desire contemporary while remaining true to the original poems. In these pages you will encounter the essence of Sufism's insights into the experience of love in all its varieties, life's mystery and wonder, and the nature of both humanity and God.

While Barks's stamp on this collection is clear, it is Rumi's unique vision and voice that leap off the page with a rapturous power that leaves readers breathless. These poems express our deepest yearning for the transcendent connection with the source of the divine: There are passionate outbursts about the torment of longing for the beloved and the sweet delight that come from union; stories of sexual adventures and of loss; poems of love and fury, sadness and joy; and quiet truths about the beauty and variety of human emotion. For Rumi, soul and body and emotion are not separate but are rather part of the great mystery of mortal life, a riddle whose solution is love.

Above all else, Rumi's poetry exposes us to the delight that comes from being fully alive, urging us always to put aside our fears and take the risk of discovering our core self.

"No one knows what makes the soul wake up so happy! Maybe a dawn breeze has blown the veil from the face of god."

These fresh, original translations magnificently convey Rumi's insights into the human heart and its longings with his signature passion and daring, focusing on the ecstatic experience of the inseparability of human and divine love. The match between Rumi's sublime poetry and Coleman Barks's poetic art are unequaled, and here this artistic union is raised to new heights.
