American Home American Home From Colonial Simplicity to the Modern Adventure by David Larkin, Michael Webb, Wendell Garrett ( 2001)
No other place in the world can compare with the variety of domestic architecture in America. HOME takes the reader on a fascinating journey to every significant house style across the continent, from early settlers' efforts to innovations of the new millennium; from simple dwellings to grand retreats and elegant townhouses

In previous, illustrated histories of architecture, most attention has been paid to the grand buildings: the seats of authority, religion and luxury. Less has been said about the house, its builders, and most importantly what it was like to live in such structures and why particular design features, furniture, furnishings and artifacts came in and went out of style.

The extraordinary story of the American home begins with the first styles brought from the Old World and adapted to the new landscapes. It continues with the new cultures, arriving in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and how they influenced the variety of home building ranging from the log cabins and tiled stove-warmed interiors in the northern Midwest to row house parlors and kitchens in New York.

Home builders then moved to the sunny West. The wide prairie invited the idea of single-level, open-plan living. In the Southwest, the pine cabins of Anglo ranchers mingled with and subsequently merged into the more adaptable adobe houses that had been sculpted by the earlier Spanish settlers. Further west, the new arrivals had an additional variety of attitudes, cultures, plans and materials to employ and enjoyed the bonus of decorative influences and simple proportions from China and Japan.

Finally, HOME also examines contemporary centers of creativity in the West and Southwest. No longer reliant on wood, brick and stone, designers and their clients prefer their houses to bask in the sun, to evoke long shadows and to provide cool interiors.

Throughout this visual documentary, the accuracy of detail in the many examples brings the experience of the historic American house to life. Among the numerous homes included are those that belonged to such luminaries as Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, as well as homes of architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson, Louis Kahn and many more.

Bloody Sundays Bloody Sundays Inside the Rough-and-Tumble World of the NFL by Michael Freeman ( 2004)

Award-winning sportswriter Mike Freeman goes beyond day-to-day newspaper journalism and ESPN highlights to take us deep inside the game and reveal the NFL in ways that will surprise the most avid football fans. He travels to the sidelines and into the locker rooms to interview hundreds of players and coaches on their expertise. Breaking the game down to its essential elements -- coaching, offense, and defense -- Freeman profiles in depth three of today's football elite: Jon Gruden, head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Michael Strahan, defensive end for the New York Giants; and Emmitt Smith, the legendary running back.

Bloody Sundays goes behind the scenes of the "secret society" of gay players who play in fear of their lives and careers, studies how the violence of the game ravages the bodies of players, and takes us into the owners' offices to look at the darker side of the sport.

Part tribute, part exposé, Bloody Sundays is a vivid portrait of professional football that "gives you so much to think about that you might find yourself switching off a game to read" (New York Times Book Review).

The Spirit of Asia The Spirit of Asia Journeys to the Sacred Places of the East by Michael Freeman, Alistair Shearer ( 2000)
A photographic tour of the greatest natural and manmade spiritual sites in Asia. More than anything else, long-distance travel in the late twentieth century has opened the eyes of millions of people in the West to the rich cultural heritage of the Asian countries, and to the ability of their great belief systems to regenerate, refresh, and renew. Whether the focus is the original animist beliefs of the far-distant past or the vitality of present-day Hinduism and Buddhism, the sacred site, natural or manmade--mountain, valley, temple, or shrine--is a place of central importance, where heavenly and earthly energies most perfectly intersect. Through the amazing odyssey undertaken by the master photographer Michael Freeman across thousands of miles of the Indian subcontinent and eastern Asia, the extraordinary numinous power of these sacred places is captured with a force that has never been so well expressed. Here are the greatest natural sites, from the Sagaing hills of Myanmar to the sacred mountain, Agung, in Bali. Here, too, are the great temple complexes, Angkor and Borobudur, and the intimate Shintoist shrines of Japan. The photographs are organized as journeys that reflect the historical spread of Eastern religions, yet each will feel to the reader like a personal quest. 200 color photographs.

The adventurous reader will find chapters on such delicacies as rat, dog, elephant, and buffalo. If reptiles arc more to your liking, you'll find information on edible lizards, snakes, and toads. In the final section, entitled "Leftovers, " Hopkins highlights such ersatz delicacies as fake food and gold and silver. With 250 full-color photographs by Michael Freeman, Strange Foods is sure to shock and delight.
