Aspects of Complexity in Recent British Music by ( 1996)

If the term complexity has any polemical significance, it is perhaps as a point of faith against simplicity or romanticism or any other slogan which proclaims an arbitrarily or self-imposed organization of attitude. But complexity has more than a polemical significance, and it is more descriptive of a quality of all music, explored to a greater or lesser extent in the works of each of the composers represented here.
This book is devoted to the work of a group of British composers who do not wish to be identified by musicologists as a particular grouping. The authors have been selected on the basis of their ability to explore individual qualities rather than common interests.

Jerusalem In the Shadow of Heaven by David Cohen, Lee Liberman, Susan Wells ( 1996)
Jerusalem, sacred center of three great religions, holds a special place in the hearts of two billion people around the globe. On the brink of Jerusalem's 3,000th anniversary celebration, fifty of the world's foremost photo journalists gathered to document life in this densely complex city steeped in history, myth and passion. The photographers -- representing the world's top publications and over a dozen nations -- captured the crowded markets and ancient alleyways of the Old City and the vibrant modern rhythms of the New. They explored the new Jewish neighborhoods that dot the hills surrounding the city center and the schools, homes and card-rooms of Arab East Jerusalem. They photographed 4th century churches, 8th century mosques, 18th century shtetl  life in Mea Shearim and 21st century technology -- all within a few miles radius. In one city, they found the walls of the Second Jewish Temple destroyed by the Roman legions, the site of Christ's crucifixion and Mohammed's stopping-off place on his way to heaven. Jerusalem: In the Shadow of Heaven  is an indispensable volume for anyone who cherishes this ancient capital of the soul. Never has so much photographic talent been assembled to portray such a fascinating city. The photographs inJerusalem  capture the city's turbulent past and its rich diversity, its fierce passions and spiritual intensity. They also give some clue to why the sages wrote, "Ten portions of beauty descended to the world. Jerusalem acquired nine." David Cohen co-originated the award-winning and bestselling Day in the Life  series. He has edited eleven books in the series including A Day in the Life of Israel.  His other books include The Jews in America  andThe Circle of Life. Lee Liberman is a Melbourne-based editor and curator who produced and co-edited A Day in the Life of Israel. She has mounted several prestigious exhibits in Australia and Israel and serves on the boards of the Jewish museum of Australia, the Victorian Ministry for the Arts, the Victorian Center for Photography and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art.
