Derived from the renowned, Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (EROS), the related editors have created a new handbook which focuses on chiral reagents used in asymmetric synthesis and is designed for the chemist at the bench. This new handbook follows the same format as the Encyclopedia, including an introduction and an alphabetical arrangement of the reagents.

The guiding principle underlying the subject matter specifically compiled in Volume 5 has been to make available to the organic chemical community a sourcebook comprehensively covering all the important &pgr;-bond-dependent transformations. Thermal, photochemical, and metal-catalyzed cycloadditions of every major type are expertly detailed by the most knowledgeable researchers in these areas. The synthetically useful electrocyclic and sigmatropic processes where alkenic centers are intimately involved in the structural change are similarly canvassed in compact detail. With added attention given to ene reactions, small-ring rearrangements, and related transition metal-associated reactions, coverage has been achieved of the full range of organic transformations directly involving the rebonding of alkenic centers. As a consequence, this volume should serve as the comprehensive sourcebook of the field for the next decade and beyond.

The volumes of Organic Reactions are collections of chapters each devoted to a single reaction, or a definite phase of a reaction, of wide applicability. The material is treated from a preparative viewpoint, with emphasis on limitations, interfering influences, effects of structure, and the selection of experimental techniques. Numerous detailed procedures illustrate the significant modifications of each method. Includes tables that contain all possible examples of the reaction under consideration.

Like its predecessors, this volume contains checked and edited procedures for dealing with important new synthetic methods or specific compounds holding potential interest for synthetic chemists. Among the organic procedures covered are: kinetic resolution by enzymatic means, stereocontrolled processes that have proven useful for constructing relative complex molecules, the vital role that organometallic reagents play in the transformation of functional groups, preparations of starting materials that play an established role in important structural transformation and/or multistep syntheses, the preparation of oxaziridine--a selective, aprotic oxidizing agent of considerable importance, and a chiral auxiliary that has found substantial use in asymmetric reactions of various types.
