Wilhelm Ernst Theodor Hoffmann added "A" to his initials for "Amadeus," in honor of Mozart. His tales--a blend of realism and fantasy--provided the basis for Offenbach's opera "Tales of Hoffmann", and influenced Poe, Balzac, Gautier, and de Musset. Hoffmann didn't begin writing fiction until he was in his late 30s; he was a government official for most of his life, as well as a theater director and composer.

The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr Together With a Fragmentary Biography of Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler on Random Sheets of Waste Paper by Anthea Bell, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Jeremy D. Adler ( 1999)
A story writer with dazzling gifts of innovation and imagination, Hoffmann's influence spread to such famous literary successors as Dickens, Dostoyevsky, Poe, Kafka, Baudelaire, and Garcia Marquez. Hoffmann was a follower of Cervantes and Sterne, a pioneering "magic realist, " fascinated by Gothic horror, extreme mental states, and supernatural events occurring within sharply (and sometimes satirically) rendered social settings. A talented composer and painter, he portrayed himself in the guise of Johannes Kreisler -- a hypochondriac, antisocial, and moody but brilliant musician. In this astonishing book a vain and very bourgeois tomcat sets out to write his memoirs, using a biography of Kreisler as a blotting pad. By a printer's error, the two lives get spliced together into a bizarre double narrative. A supreme example of literary bravado, Tomcat Murr is also shot through with the warmth, humanity, and almost uncanny ability to captivate his readers that make Hoffmann the greatest of German storytellers.

The Nutcracker by Michele Spirn, E.T.A. Hoffmann, A. Minnekaev, Natalia Merentseva ( 1998)
Since its creation in 1816 by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker has been a Christmas tradition. Countless artists, writers, and musicians have reinterpreted this charming story of holiday magic. Now, Russian artist Azat Minnekaev has illustrated The Nutcracker anew, going back to Hoffmann's text and reviving much of the original story. The graceful text and 32 richly detailed, full-color illustrations created specially for this book bring fresh life to the classic tale. This Nutcracker restores characters that have been omitted from most retellings of the story, including Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet and other stage productions.Among the unfamiliar details is the "tale within the tale" of a sausage-hungry Mouse Queen who cast a wicked spell, transforming a young prince into the Nutcracker. Now reset within the well-known plot, this and other elements add to the delight of this new Nutcracker, which will enchant the entire family.Azat Minnekaev's paintings are in museums and private collections around the world.Natalia Merentseva, who lives with her husband, Azat Minnekaev, in St. Petersburg, Russia, is a violinist and professional quilter and doll maker.Michele Spirn has written more than 40 books for adults and children. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband.
