John Tenniel Biography & Notes

British illustrator Sir John Tenniel is well known for his illustration of Lewis Carroll's ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. Tenniel's working relationship with Lewis Carroll was not an easy one--he and Carroll, both meticulous and demanding, fought for control over the content of the illustrations. Carroll's persistence probably stemmed from his own desire to illustrate the story himself.

Alice in Wonderland / Through the Looking Glass Alice in Wonderland / Through the Looking Glass by ( 1999)
As he escorted the three young daughters of a colleague on a trip up the river Isis, Lewis Carroll invented ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, the story of a little girl who tumbles down a rabbit hole. Full of such wonderfully eccentric characters as the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, the book is simultaneously a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children's literature, a fairy tale, a dream, and a child's chronicle of growing up.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll ( 2007)
As he escorted the three young daughters of a colleague on a trip up the river Isis, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson invented ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, the story of a little girl who tumbles down a rabbit hole. Written down expressly for Alice Liddell, the story was originally entitled ALICE'S ADVENTURES UNDERGROUND, but it is also known as ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and it was published under the name of Lewis Carroll. The book is full of such wonderfully eccentric characters as the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter. The book is simultaneously a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children's literature, a fairy tale, a dream, and a child's chronicle of growing up. Carroll also wrote a sequel entitled THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE.

S. Byatt in her Introduction, “lies in language. . . . It is play, and word-play, and its endless intriguing puzzles continue to reveal themselves long after we have ceased to be children.”

The Annotated Alice The Annotated Alice The Definitive Edition by Martin Gardner, Lewis Carroll, John Tenniel ( 1999)
For over half a century, Martin Gardner has established himself as one of the world's leading authorities on Lewis Carroll. His Annotated Alice, first published in 1960, has over half a million copies in print around the world and is highly sought after by families and scholars alike -- for it was Gardner who first decoded the wordplay and the many mathematical riddles that lie embedded in Carroll's two classic stories: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Forty years after this groundbreaking publication, Norton is proud to publish the Definitive Edition of The Annotated Alice, a work that combines the notes of Gardner's 1960 edition with his 1990 update, More Annotated Alice, as well as additional new discoveries and updates drawn from Gardner's encyclopedic knowledge of the texts. Illustrated with John Tenniel's classic and beloved art -- along with many recently discovered Tenniel pencil sketches -- The Annotated Alice will be Gardner's most beautiful and enduring tribute to Carroll's masterpieces yet.

The sequel to ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND chronicles Alice's dizzying trip through Wonderland as a chess piece in a mad-cap game that involves the now-famous Jabberwocky poem. After she passes through a mirror, Alice is mistaken for a flower, then finds herself racing to do the Red Queen's bidding in a confusing series of chess moves. Along the way, all manner of rhymes and poems must be understood, and characters such as Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty, and the Lion and the Unicorn are encountered. The kittens belonging to the real Alice put on a brief appearance as well. Lewis Carroll's story, a wonderful blend of the fantastic and the hilariously real, is one of the great classics of children's literature.
