American Passages A History of the United States by David M. Oshinsky, Edward L. Ayers, Jean R. Soderlund, Lewis L. Gould ( 2004)
AMERICAN PASSAGES, SECOND EDITION examines U.S. history the way people live--in the flow of time. Rather than pursuing one topic (such as politics, culture, society, reform, the military, or economics) at a time, each chapter of the text interweaves important themes and issues into one interrelated narrative. Through this method of presentation, students can observe the many ways that events, movements, and groups of people have served to shape history and can learn to make connections between these themes and issues. References to the book's fully integrated Web site allow students to experience history from the vantage of those who lived it. AMERICAN PASSAGES: A HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, SECOND EDITION is available in the following split options: American Passages, Comprehensive, Second Edition (Chapters 1?32) ISBN: 0534607411; American Passages, Volume I: To 1877, Second Edition (Chapters 1?16) ISBN: 053460742X; American Passages, Volume II: Since 1863, Second Edition (Chapters 15?32) ISBN: 0534607438.

American Passages A History of the United States by David M. Oshinsky, Edward L. Ayers, Jean R. Soderlund, Lewis L. Gould ( 2006)
With a unique attention to time as the defining nature of history, AMERICAN PASSAGES allows students to gain a view of American history as a complete, compelling narrative. Rather than categorizing facets of historical change into ahistorical abstractions, such as "themes" or "topics", AMERICAN PASSAGES emphasizes the intertwined nature of three key characteristics of time ? sequence, simultaneity, and contingency. With an unparalleled sense of clarity and purpose, the authors convey how events grow from other events, people's actions, and broad structural changes (sequence), how apparently disconnected events occurred in close chronological proximity to one another and were situated in larger, shared contexts (simultaneity), and how history suddenly pivoted because of events, personalities, and unexpected outcomes (contingency). To further highlight this unique framework, this text includes two new essay features. "Flashpoints" take a closer look at pivotal events specific to a given time and place. These events emphasize contingency and show students how key events, personal decisions have influenced historical outcomes over time. The "Enduring Issues" feature traces topics across time to emphasize how recurring patterns appear in different forms as time changes the context. Both features help students understand the historical significance of pivotal events and recurring patterns over time. By grasping these concepts, students can better apply historical lessons to their own lives. AMERICAN PASSAGES is available in the following splits: *American Passages, Comprehensive, Third Edition (Chapters 1?32) ISBN: 0495050156; *American Passages, Volume I: To 1877, Third Edition (Chapters 1?16) ISBN: 0495050628; *American Passages, Volume II: Since 1863, Third Edition (Chapters 15?32) ISBN: 0495050636.

Inside the Natchez Trace Collection New Sources for Southern History by ( 1999)
When it was acquired by the Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin in 1986, the Natchez Trace Collection was one of the great unexplored treasures of southern history. Its plantation records, bank correspondence, songbooks, and family letters, among many other gems, combine to form a cornucopia of the regions history. In this collection of essays, noted southern historians act as guides through this still largely untapped resource, describing its holdings on such topics as slavery, women's roles, the Old Southwest, Jacksonian politics, the sectional conflict, and the position of businessmen in the antebellum period. Designed to facilitate further scholarly exploration and use of this historical cache, Inside the Natchez Trace Collection does not exhaust the riches of the collection but rather illustrates its extraordinary research potential, proposing workable research topics and promising new lines of inquiry.

Watching Television Come of Age The New York Times Reviews by Lewis L. Gould, Jack Gould ( 2002)
Providing video companionship for isolated housewives, afternoon babysitting for children, and nonstop evening entertainment for the whole family, television revolutionized American society in the post-World War II years. Helping the first TV generation make sense of the new medium was the mission of Jack Gould, television critic of The New York Times from 1947 to 1972. In columns noteworthy for crisp writing, pointed insights, and fair judgment, he highlighted both the untapped possibilities and the imminent perils of television, becoming "the conscience of the industry" for many people.
In this book, historian Lewis L. Gould, Jack Gould's son, collects over seventy of his father's best columns. Grouped topically, they cover a wide range of issues, including the Golden Age of television drama, McCarthy-era blacklisting, the rise and fall of Edward R. Murrow, quiz show scandals, children's programming, and the impact of television on American life and of television criticism on the medium itself. Lewis Gould also supplies a brief biography of his father that assesses his influence on the evolution of television, as well as prefaces to each section. |
