1) Breakdown: How America's Intelligence Failures Led to September 11
Gertz, Bill

Natl Book Network. 09/01/2002. 256 pgs. What did the nation's intelligence agencies know about the possibility of terrorist attacks prior to September 11, 2001? Was there a systemic failure to gather, share, or act on such information? Did the FBI and the CIA have sufficient, specific, and credible information on groups like al Qaeda? An investigative reporter shares what he has learned from a variety of sources, including a vast amount of highly classified documents. 4) My FBI: Bringing Down the Mafia, Investigating Bill Clinton, and Fighting the War on Terror (Qty: 5)
Louis J. Freeh

St Martins Pr. 09/15/2005. 336 pgs. In his memoir, MY FBI, Louis Freeh chronicles his long career, from FBI agent fighting organized crime in New York's famed Southern District, to a federal judgeship, to director of the FBI. Freeh took over the bureau at a time when it was under increasing Congressional scrutiny and amid growing public discontent. He immediately "cleaned house," engendering a great deal of negative reaction from career professionals. Yet in his book he remains one of the bureau's great boosters. He tells what it was like to work with Attorney General Janet Reno, and how his relationship with his boss, Bill Clinton, was soured by scandal. Among the newsworthy revelations in MY FBI are that, following the 1996 Khobar Towers terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia, Clinton met with Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. Instead of pressing him to facilitate the FBI investigation by allowing the agency to interview suspects in Saudi custody, Clinton told the Prince he "understood" why he did not accede to the requests. Then, charges Freeh, Clinton hit the prince up for a donation to his presidential library. Freeh also tells how, during the tawdry Lewinsky affair, he set up a clandestine meeting at which a technician took a Clinton blood sample so that the FBI could compare it to the DNA extracted from a semen-stained dress worn by Lewinsky. Needless to say, the two were barely on speaking terms when Clinton left office. Finally, Freeh provides his account of the ways that the FBI fought cyber-crime, international organized crime, and terrorism on his watch. 5) BURN BEFORE READING: PRESIDENTS, CIA DIRECTORS, AND SECRET INTELLIGENCE (Qty: 2)
Stansfield Turner

Hyperion Books. 10/01/2005. 308 pgs. Admiral Stansfield Turner was Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) during the Clinton administration. In BURN BEFORE READING, he applies his experience to a review of the relationship between presidents and their DCIs from Harry S. Truman through George W. Bush. Each case study takes into account the individual personalities and the dynamics of the relationship, as well as the key intelligence issues that dominated each administration. Along the way, Turner provides insight into how the CIA works, and recounts the sometimes destabilizing (to "the Company") reforms that resulted from several violations of its charter. He explores whether and how a DCI can provide raw intelligence within what is often a politicized environment, one made more strained by Congressional scrutiny and media exposure. Importantly, he weighs whether intelligence failures were a factor in 9/11 and considers the role of the CIA in the issue of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Through his case studies, Turner presents in some detail an argument for substantial reform in national intelligence. Originally published at $23.95 You save 96% off the cover price!
