Billy Budd and Other Stories (Penguin Classics)
Penguin USA. 08/01/1989. Reprint. Unpublished in Melville's lifetime, BILLY BUDD is considered one of his greatest works. It began as a ballad, but grew into a short novel with an ambiguous plot that raises more questions than it answers, about good and evil, justice and injustice. Billy Budd, a handsome, angelic, and beloved young sailor, is wrongly accused of inciting mutiny. He lashes out in a rage and accidentally kills his accuser, the demonic Claggart, with one blow. The ship's commander, Captain Vere, a conflicted man of principle, cries, "Struck dead by an angel of God! Yet the angel must hang." And a court martial does indeed condemn the saintly Billy to death. His last words are, "God bless Captain Vere." Billy Budd is widely interpreted as a Christ figure, the victim of a kind of ritual sacrifice, after which order is restored. He is also seen as an innocent, Adam-like character who is destroyed by the evil that is inescapable in the world. When it was published, one critic called this novella "Melville's last will and spiritual testament." Originally published at $7.95 You save 84% off the cover price!

True at First Light : A Fictional Memoir [Hardcover]
Simon & Schuster. 07/01/1999. 319 pgs. Hemingway's posthumous novel is set in Africa and involves an American man, his wife, and his African mistress. Patrick Hemingway, the novelist's son, compiled this text from the 200,000-word journal Hemingway kept of his Kenya tour in 1953 that seems to have been a self-destructive blend of safari, adultery, and hype. The resulting novel is an idyllic version of this tour, blending fact and fiction--Hemingway's last attempt to burnish his image as a great hunter, a great lover, and a sophisticated man of the world. Portrait of an Artist, as an Old Man : A Novel [Paperback]
Simon & Schuster. 07/01/2001. 233 pgs. Heller's posthumous novel, completed shortly before his death in 1999, is about an elderly man whose first novel made him rich and famous. Now forced to deal with age and infirmity, he casts about for a subject for what he knows will be his last book. He ponders writing about his wife's sexual history, updating TOM SAWYER or Kafka's METAMORPHOSIS, and composing riffs on various Greek myths and Bible stories. In the end, the book is a rich, irreverent, bawdy satirical stew that sheds light on Heller's creative process and on the coming of age in his own life.
