41) Fruits Basket, Volume 1
Natsuki Takaya

Tokyopop. 02/01/2004. 200 pgs. This charming, popular shojo manga (Japanese girls' comic), known as FURUBA in Japan, inspired the anime of the same name. Tohru Honda, a homeless orphan, finds shelter and welcome at the home of the Sohmas, a family who suffers from an unusual curse: they change into animals associated with the Chinese Zodiac whenever anyone of the opposite gender hugs them. The black-and-white art has some unusual and appealing textures and shading, particularly in the clothing and backgrounds, but is basically typical shojo in its character depictions: big eyes; small, sharp noses; and androgynously pretty boys. The book is typeset in its original Japanese right-to-left format, and also features sidebars of informal comments from the author/illustrator about the series and her personal life. 42) Cross Vol. 1 (Cross) (Qty: 4)
Sumiko Amakawa

Tokyopop. 11/01/2004. 192 pgs. Father Takara Amakusa is a teenaged Roman Catholic priest and gifted exorcist. In this first volume of a shojo manga series, Takara must rescue a beautiful young woman marked with Kabbalistic symbols on her skin from a cult of Satanists, discover the secret past of a nun with the ability to resemble the beholder's loved ones, and deflect the curses of a vengeful fellow student. Western readers should be aware that the author/artist's depictions of the ways of the Catholic Church and of the priesthood are somewhat less than accurate. Future volumes may explain why Takara's father is himself a priest, and why it's not deemed inappropriate for Takara (who, by the way, is far too young to be a priest) to express interest in the opposite sex. But if one's disbelief at these details is suspended (and this is intended to be a fantasy, after all), CROSS Vol. 1 is quite an enjoyable read. The black-and-white art is all about the gorgeous, big-eyed characters. Reprinted in the original Japanese right-to-left format, the book also includes an explanation of some of the terms used in the text and an afterword by the author/artist.
