1) For Whom the Bell Tolls
Hemingway, Ernest

Simon & Schuster. 07/01/1995. Reprint. In FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, published in 1940, Hemingway explores his own conflicting emotions about heroism, the futility of war, and the value of human life--a theme that is exemplified by the book's title, which is taken from the 17th-century poet John Donne's famous sermon that begins "No man is an island" and goes on to say one should not ask for whom the funeral bell tolls: "it tolls for thee." The novel, which is set during the Spanish Civil War in the spring of 1937, takes place over the course of four days. It tells the story of Robert Jordon, a young American attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain--a college teacher who happened to be in Spain on vacation and decided to join the Loyalists. He has now been commissioned to blow up a bridge. Soon after he arrives at the mountain camp, he meets a young woman named Maria who has been raped by the fascists and seen her parents killed. The two fall instantly in love, but their romance is cut short by the inexorable progress of the war. With passionate clarity, Hemingway depicts Jordan's conflicting tangle of emotions: the idealism with which he joined the Loyalist cause, his belief in romantic love as salvation, his growing questions about whether violence is ever justified, and the combination of fatalism and fear with which he confronts his own death. In the novel's final moments, as Jordan faces the inevitable, he resolves the questions that have plagued him. Hemingway's novel, with its bleak view of war and the failure of idealism, has been called an antiwar document, but the book is more complex than that. It is more about the grim necessity of recognizing that moral issues are seldom clearly marked out in black and white, and that human beings must struggle constantly with difficult choices. 4) While England Sleeps
Leavitt, David

Houghton Mifflin. 10/01/1995. Revised. 284 pgs. A departure from David Leavitt's usual domestic and very American novels, WHILE ENGLAND SLEEPS is a heartfelt gay love story set in Europe. It chronicles the romance between English writer Brian Botsford and Communist activist Edward Phelan. Botsford regards his homosexuality as a mere phase; his ambivalence about the affair drives Phelan away, and he goes off to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Then, feeling guilty, Botsford overcomes his denial about his own nature, and follows Phelan into war. This novel became the center of a literary contretemps when the poet Stephen Spender (then in his 80s) sued Leavitt, charging that the book was not only "pornographic," "idle, slovenly, [and] dishonest," it was also little more than a thinly disguised and salacious retelling of parts of Spender's own 1951 memoir WORLD WITHIN WORLD. The case was settled out of court, and Leavitt's publisher was forced to withdraw the book's English edition and substantially revise subsequent editions. Leavitt also included an afterword, stoutly defending himself against Spender's accusations. Originally published at $11.95 You save 92% off the cover price!

5) Nightlines
Neil Jordan

Random House Inc. 09/01/1995. As he did in his movie "The Crying Game," Neil Jordan places an intensely personal story in the context of political and social violence in Ireland. Donal Gore has lost his mother; when the piano teacher Rose moves in with him and his father, Donal begins an affair with her. The relationship ends when he goes to fight--against his father's wishes--in the Spanish Civil War. Imprisoned, he is sustained by memories of night fishing with his father on the beach with his father. Upon his return, he finds that his father has married Rose. Donal's involvement with the IRA, his ties to Germany during World War II, and his father's service with the former Free State government provide the political context for Jordan's story. 13) Home is the Exile
Masters, Hilary

Permanent Pr Pub Co. 08/01/1996. 286 pgs. A pair of stories, told in alternating chapters, which dovetail at the end. In 1939, Roy Armstrong is exiled in Mexico, his U.S. citizenship revoked because of his involvement in the Spanish Civil War. He turns to Peggy Arnett, a steel heiress with a passion for revolutionary causes, for help. In the second narrative thread, which takes place in 1986, Walter Hardy is 28 years old and starting his career in politics in ignominious fashion: dealing with the Nicaraguan freedom fighters and getting caught for it during the Oliver North hearings. However, he has evidence that not only indicts those more powerful than he is, but involves Peggy and Roy as well. Originally published at $28.00 You save 96% off the cover price!
