By highlighting shifting contemporary attitudes towards the band, acclaimed rock biographer Clinton Heylin documents the dramatic shift in social, artistic, and political attitudes that took place in the '60s and early '70s. In a succinctly written preface, he sums up the Velvets' career: though largely reviled (when they weren't being ignored) during their approximately five-year lifespan, the band's blend of avant-garde, overtly sex- and drug-oriented lyrical imagery, sonically challenging rock, and intense visual effects later exerted a huge influence on many seminal punk rockers, including Patti Smith, Jonathan Richman, and Sonic Youth. An article by Warhol alumna Ingrid Superstar ("Their songs are very, very nice, quite nice") and typically combative conversations with Lou Reed himself ("I don't believe people came from apes") share space with reviews by celebrated writers like Lester Bangs, Richard Williams, and Lenny Kaye, and pieces from publications like the long-defunct British underground magazine Oz.
