Bookstores

Books and Booze – a profitable business, or pending hangover?

A look at a new shop in Asheville, featuring champagne, wine, espresso, and beautiful books.

Battery Park Book Exchange

Asheville’s latest addition to the bookstore scene is Battery Park Book Exchange, and offers a wide range of books in a great downtown setting. They operate two floors of books, shelved around rooms decorated with couches, Oriental rugs, quality lamps–and a champagne bar?

I almost couldn’t believe it. I’ve never seen a bookstore that offers alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages and wasn’t more “bar” than “book haven.”  Although the concept is not necessarily novel (no pun intended), it’s a great pairing. Who wouldn’t like a glass of some nice bubbly while reading a fine first edition?

They’ll be offering wine, beer and champagne in their small bar area, and staying open later than some other local bookstores (until 10 p.m. possibly in the summer season) so their patrons can enjoy outdoor seating, too.

Let’s just hope the current economic climate doesn’t bring a damper on the new lit-chic party in town.
