Charleston, SC, 1901. Good +. (CHARLESTON/CIVIL WAR) MOISE, E. W. Address by General E.W. Moise, at Charleston, S.C. on Memorial Day, Year 1901. Typewritten manuscript, no imprint. 5pp. Good + Condition. Edwin Warren Moise came from a prominent South Carolina Jewish family. During the Civil War he raised a Confederate regiment and later allied himself with Wade Hampton and the Redemptionists. This is his lament to the Lost Cause. “The time must come, and that ere long, when the land that produced the heroism and self-abnegation of 1861 will reap its reward… There is no record of a struggle wherein manly virtue and womanly fortitude earned a more lasting fame than in the rise, struggle, and fall of the Confederate States of America.”

New York:: Charles L. Webster & Company,, 1887.. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine bright copy (previous owner name on flyleaf) in green cloth binding with the Army of the Potomac Society emblem in gilt and red on the front board. General George Brinton McClellan is one of the most controversial figures of the American Civil War. He was beloved by the soldiers of the Army of the Potomac, insubordinate to his commander in chief, a master at preparing for war but cautious about engaging, Criticized throughout the remainder of his life, he never publicly defended his actions as commander of the Union army. Here, however, his posthumously-published memoir provides his answers to the critics.Using a combination of military documents, his own field records, and letters to his beloved wife Nelly, McClellan does not attempt a full autobiography but instead focuses on his short time as general in chief of the army.
