The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a 'Golliwogg'
by Upton, Bertha
- Used
- very good
- Hardcover
Contains 31 full page colour illustrations as well as little vignettes within the sepia script text pages. This is the first of 13 golliwogg books written and illustrated by the mother and daughter Upton pair. In this first book in the series the golliwogg was not intended as the 'star' of the show and he was really just a supporting character to the Dutch peg dolls, appearing in just over a third of the illustrations. However he proved so popular at the time that he became the central character in the subsequent books. In all of the Upton books the Golliwogg is presented as friendly and kind, unlike in later imitations [such as Blyton] where he could be portrayed as a bit of a scallywag. This is a charming story of peg Dutch dolls in a toy shop that come to life at midnight. With no clothes they make themselves a dress out of the American flag [Florence spent the first 14 years of her life in the U.S.] and the book narrates their nightime escapades with the other toys. When the Golliwogg first appears they are momentarily frightened but then they soon become best of friends and end up saving his 'life'. Illustration of the sun [who features in the last scene of the story] on the lower board. Golliwogg and two peg dolls dressed in flag dresses on upper board. Stiff card boards with tan backstrip. Oblong format; 28x21 cm. 64 pp [however as page numbers 23/4 and 55/6 have been used twice there are really 68 pages! Note - these double page numbers are not an indication of a first edition as sometimes claimed]. Two corners chipped. Slight marking to boards. Personal dedication on ffep. Occasional short closed tear but basically clean complete contents.
