Martha Laurens was the daughter of Henry Laurens who was President of the Continental Congress. She was sister of John Laurens, close friend of George Washington. She married David Ramsay who also served as President of the Continental Congress for a year. He was also a practicing physician who introduced vaccination into South Carolina.

Beside the personal nad professional data concerning the artist, this volume included Biographical Checklist of over 200 of his works. The test of this edition of Mrs. Middleton's book is a faithful copy of the original volume which was published in 1953. New photographs are included in this revised edition and a new plate was used on the dust jacket.This edition was done by Mrs. Middleton's daughters, Margaret Middleton Rivers and Dorothy Middleton Anderson .
