In the context of the competition between Genoa and Venice for the dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Genoese captured Chios island in the 13th century. The Genoese period of Chios (until 1566) has also been imprinted in the local architecture. The famous villages of Mastichohoria were built with plans, architects, and craftsmen that came on purpose from Genoa. The mediaeval villages of Liguria (Dolce Acqua, Ventimiglia, San Remo, etc.), which were built around the same time period, are identical: same structure, technique and organization.
