Oldham, Lancashire, England: Incline Press, 2004. Limited Edition. Slipcased. Fine+. 10.75 " x 14.75" Two volumes. A scarce limited edition of 350 copies designed and letterpress printed by Graham Moss and Kathy Whalen on Magnani paper. This is copy number 249 of 350. This folio is bound in tan cloth appearing on the spine and fore edges with patterned paper-covered boards. The slipcase houses a book and a specially-designed portfolio. The portfolio contains facsimile sketchbooks and a CD of artist Peggy Angus taken from the tapes author Carolyn Trant made while working on this book with her. On the CD are a few of Angus' life stories from the 1940's opening with Peggy Angus singing "Raggle Taggle Gypsy O." The book, portfolio and slipcase are in excellent condition. Author Carolyn Trant was one of Peggy Angus' students. Peggy Angus was a craft worker, designer of handprinted wallpaper and tile designer. Heavy and oversized. According to John Randle, 'Art for Life is a "rich tapestry of a book if there ever was one, and a magnificent achievement for any small press ... the style and three-dimensional approach suit the Angus mood perfectly." A stunning volume in superb condition.

Description:
London: Parvenu Press, 2008. First edition. Cloth. Fine. 6" by 3". Carolyn Trant. A very scarce artist's book produced by Carolyn Trant, of the Art Workers' Guild. A fantastic concertina book, with Trant's striking images. The first edition of this work in the concertina form. Previously, 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' was issued in a larger format, which was a limited edition. On her website Trant notes that she produced this smaller 'theatrical booklet' version of the work for the Artists Book Fair at the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton. The poem for this work was written for Trant by Judith Kazantzis. From the library of Allen and Beryl Freer. The Freers were avid art collectors, and acquired quite the selection over the twentieth century, of works mostly bought from the artists. Allen organised many exhibitions of artists he admired and published several works on art. A charming work. In the publisher's original boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Concertina is loosely… Read More

London: Parvenu Press, 2018. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Limited Edition. Hardcover. "These books I am printing are trying to combine being painted and printed; I always print like a painter anyway - the blocks are just another way of getting colour and image onto the paper - and each book, of a very small edition will be slightly different. I want it to be quite rough and immediate, not pretty at all - I am not sure my skills stretch to tragedy so rough and raw will have to do.... The text flickers between current events and concerns, structured around the medieval story of Perceval, The Holy Fool, and yes - The Ruin. I am trying to mirror the metaphors of the writing with the way I print - shreds of allusions and references in the imagery, cut shapes. Fragmented printing styles. The covers, if I ever get them dry in time, are trying to gather up and meld some of the whirling detritus of the world, both natural and man made - and compact it into a surface; I did this once for a unique volume,… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
