When France's King Henry II died in 1559 and his sickly 15-year-old heir Francis II followed the next year, the throne went to 10-year-old Charles Maximilian, who became Charles IX; his mother, Catherine de' Medici, dominated his reign, which is noted for the Wars of Religion and for the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. Partial vellum DS, 1p, 11" X 8", n.p., n.y. [September 1570 lightly pencilled in another hand]. Very good. Folds and mild bit of wear evident, but overall handsome and boldly penned. Though penned in difficult early French (which is to modern French what Elizabethan English is to modern English) and not accompanied by a translation, this is a probate approval legal document. Spine and upper spine quadrant of upper board restored with black calf, edges of text block smoke-darkened, with occasional shallow isolated penetration into margins, early repair on verso of frontispiece, tidemark in upper forecorner/quadrant of last three text leaves and endleaves, small mend on verso of title at top margin, occasional hand-soiling and smudging, a few minor marginal nicks or short tears; in spite of these detractions, in the main a bright, crisp copy. It was filmed in 1992 for the Ray Bradbury Theater television series. Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles, is one of America's most celebrated science fiction, fantasy and horror writers. In this story, an American author visits a Dublin pub where he is caught up in the excitement over a local sporting event known as "anthem sprinting." Runners compete to see who can exit the theater fastest during the few seconds between the end of a film and the start of the Irish National Anthem. Handwritten changes by the author on a couple of pages (see photos). Included is a signed letter from Bradbury.

1865. Hardcover. Good. The West Point account book of William Gerhard, while a cadet, 1865-1869, and 6 documents relating to his military service. William Gerhard (1847-1914) of Philadelphia was the son of Benjamin Gerhard (1811-1864) and Anna Sergeant Gerhard (1815-1873). He married Sally Lyle Howell (1855-1879) and they had one child, Arthur Howell Gerhard (1877-1949). He was appointed a cadet on Sept. 8, 1864, and was at West Point from June 1865 through June 1869, when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in the 9th United States Cavalry on June 15. He served in Texas from Oct. 1869 until he resigned on September 30, 1874, having been promoted to 1st Lieut on Nov. 19, 1873. Following his military service, he was a manufacturer of chains and anchors in Ardmore, Pa., and then a senior member of Empire Chain Works, Philadelphia, Pa.
