Biblia, Das ist: Die gantze Heilige Schrifft dess Alten und Neuen Testaments. Wie solche von ... Martin Luther ... in unsere Teutsche Mutter-Sprach ... gebracht ... Samt einer Vorrede Herrn J.M. Dillherrns

by BIBLE-GERMAN

Nuremberg: J.A. Endter. 1770. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin (darkened with age and a bit worn but very sound) with 8 decorated brass corner's and remnants of brass clasps Folio . Impressive copy of the "Elector Bible" which is famous for its series of fine engraved full-page portraits of Electors of the Holy Roman Empire that appear at the beginning of the work along with a full-page portrait of Luther. The attractive engravings, by J.C. Claussner, depict the Electors with elaborate landscapes that include city views, or decorative interior settings. The added engraved frontispieces and text plates are by I.A. Delsenbach after the designs of P. Decker. The great Nuremberg publishing house of Johann Andreas Endter published numerous editions of this popular version which is based on the German version of Luther's text as edited by Michael Dilherr (or Diller). Appended to the work is the text of the "Augsburg Confession." The bibles were printed on typical German paper of the eighteenth century which was soft and limp; tending to toning and foxing as well as absorb moisture resulting in marginal damp marks. The fine series of portraits is often incomplete, presumably the owners would remove their particular Elector's portrait and Luther's to decorate their home. It is interesting to note that many German emigrants to America in the eighteen century brought with them a copy of an "Elector Bible" and very often, such as in the present copy, would use the end-papers as a genealogy of the family listing births, baptisms, marriages and deaths. On the first two leaves the first entry is dated 1787 and the last is dated 1835 by "John Hilsel & Wife" which are in German and a single inscription facing the engraved title, in English dated October 1864, stating that John Hilsel gives this bible to his son John. Complete copies in their original bindings, such as the present example, are scarce on the market [100], 1181, [23] pp. With 2 engraved title-pages, 12 full-page engraved portraits, 6 full-page text engravings and 144 text woodcuts. Title printed in red and black. Text toned and foxed as usual, few marginal damp stains, traces of use (minor marginal hand soiling), some blank margins a little frayed. Some fraying to the outer blank margins of the first gathering are very neatly mended (not affecting any text). Some early annotations on front end-papers. § Jahn 140
