Charleston: Evans & Cogswell, 1860. Paperback. 8vo. Wrappers. 6pp. Very good. Although the goal of this report was to urge the state conventions of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida "that no final separate State action shall be taken upon the question of secession from the Union, until a general Convention of the Southern States can be had," it was not received before South Carolina's withdrawal; therefore, this pamphlet became South Carolina's attempt "briefly to state the causes which induced the passage of the Ordinance" to Georgians. Boston: : Lee and Shepard Publishers (New York: Chas T. Dillingham),, 1889.. Hardcover first edition -. Good only (some overall wear to the covers, fraying to the sides of the spine, missing rear endpaper, but still sturdy condition.) Very uncommon in the first edition with no copies currently available for sale. . First printing. Classic Civil War novel about an Andersonville prisoner-of-war John Rockwell, who reaches across the "deadline" to pluck a bunch of violets, and about the Southern soldier and prison guard, Jack Foster, who ignores regulations and does not shoot him. When this was first published, almost twenty-five years had passed since the Civil War, but sectarian feelings still ran high on the subject of how prisoners-of-war were treated, and Andersonville, especially, was an example to the North of inhumane treatment. Although there was beginning to be some recognition that neither the North nor the South were blameless, and that it was the nature of the war itself that… Read More

Description:
A blow-by-blow account of The Campaign of Chancellorsville in 1863, wherein the newly promoted Joseph Hooker took command of the Union forces (130,000 troops) and in April, 1863 took the battle to the Confederate army across the Rappahannock river. Union casualties at Chancellorsville numbered 17,287, Confederate 12,463. Counted among the latter was Stonewall Jackson who was mortally wounded by his own soldiers in an accidental shooting. As for Hooker, he was allowed to "resign" from command, after Lincoln and his advisers determined "that both the check at Chancellorsville and retreat were inexcusable, and that Hooker must not be entrused with the conduct of another battle." Collector's Notes laid in.
The usual attention given by Easton Press gives us a deep red leather volume with gold decoration and spine title and author in gold as well. Gilt edges, silk moire endpapers and satin bookmark. The book does have one flaw: a small edge stain on the gold edges, pages 505 to the end of the Index, page 528.

New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1910. Cloth. Very Good +. A very solid example of the 1910 true 1st edition, limited to 1,000 copies. Tight and VG+ in its wine-red cloth, with bright gilt-titling along the spine. A touch of very light spotting to the front panel, a bit of light soiling and offsetting --with one small (hair-crack) tear-- at the pastedowns. Still though, very presentable. Thick quarto, top-edge gilt. 39 maps (many of them fold-outs, a number of them tucked into the rear pastedown pocket) plus additional "sketches" and "plans". The definitive history of what many consider the Confederacy's single greatest victory of the War, a victory which would embolden Robert E. Lee to penetrate into Pennsylania, resulting in the showdown at Gettysburg.
