New York: W.H. Tinson, Printer and Sterotyper, 1857. Rare almost near fine copy of 1857 first edition in light green blind stamped cloth covered boards. Gilt lettering on tight spine. Written by H. Hollister, M.D., published by W.H. Tinson, Printer and Sterotyper, New York. Some foxing to early pages, lightly bumped at corners, a few surface marks, light fading to spine. 328 pp., frontis portrait of author Hollister, full page map of Capouse Valley. Hollister invested twelve years researching and writing this broad ranging local history book. This treasure sets forth Indian and geologic history of the Valley. Much is written about coal deposits, Indian tribes and the importance of Capouse Meadow. The author presents modern history beginning with the era in which the area was part of Connecticut. The first permanent white settlements in 1769 are described. There is a listing of Lackawanna Valley residents from 1769 to 1776 and biographies of prominent settlers. Much is written about early mills and forges. There is a significant section on the history of Scranton. Much is written about Providence Borough and the Township of Carbondale. Interesting work about the The Delaware and Hudson Canal, the Pennsylvania Coal Company and other coal companies. This gem of book was reprinted many times, updated and expanded, but the first edition is always the most important. This is the best copy we have seen on the market. We specialize in books about Scranton and the surrounding area.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Almost Near Fine/Issued Without Jacket.
