After years of research and patient treatment, he was the clinician of reference on diabetes until Elliot P. Joslin published his findings. Bouchardat was the first to develop a clinically proven treatment for Type 2 Diabetes that effectively reduced glucose levels. His dietetic therapy included daily self-testing by patients of the glucose levels in their urine using the Trommer test, a regimen of physical exercise, and a low carbohydrate diet that unlike the recommended diet of fatty meats prescribed by John Rollo ("An Account of Two Cases of the Diabetes Mellitus") was nutritionally balanced, palatable, and sustainable. After 1871, based on his observations of the 1870 German siege of Paris, he advocated a low intake diet with the minimum calories required for sustenance and in 1875 he published his definitive text, "De La Glycosurie Ou Diabète Sucre", which included his observations on lesions in the pancreas. REFERENCE: Joslin et al, Joslin's Diabetes Mellitus, p. 3, authors praise, "Bouchardat's pioneering and "meticulous long-term studies on human diabetes". Standard bibliographical works record only the 1875 book: Garrison-Morton 3940; Hirsch I/646-47. EDITION NOTE: printed from type by L. Martinet, Paris. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.
