Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1857. Prose Writers of America was first published in 1847 (this is the 4th and last edition.) And was specifically designed to compete with a similar anthology by Cornelius Mathews and Evert Augustus Duyckinck. Editor/author Rufus Wilmot Griswold was an influential editor but less than civil and scrupulous, he outed Walt Whitman (although apparently it took one to know one) and is perhaps best remembered today for defaming Egdar Allan Poe, even becoming Poe's literary executor under less than ethical circumstances.
