Venice: Paganino de Paganini, 1509. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio [29.25 x 19.25 cm], (66) ff., including integral blank (E10), 87 plates (unsigned). A6,b-d8,E10, a-b8, c10, (unsigned plates), including title and final leaf printed in red and black and numerous geometrical diagrams printed in margin of text section, as well as floral and criblé initials in text. Bound in 19th century red morocco (c 1849-1879) signed Trautz-Bauzonnet, with morocco ex-libris of Robert Hoe, joints worn but sound. Sympathetically washed. Repair to initial P on D1, with some letters or partial letters restored on verso; minor repair to clean tear in blank upper margin of illustration XIIII. Generally a very large and attractive copy with clear and bright impressions of the illustrations. First and only edition of one of the richest sources for studying the interplay of mathematics, art and architectural theory and typography during the High Renaissance by the mathematician Luca Pacioli, with illustrations designed by Leonardo da Vinci. For height and amplitude of margins, this is among the finest copies we have encountered in 30 years, two cm taller than the excellent Schaefer copy. A copy with a fine, and for a work of typographical interest, appropriate provenance, having belonged to the great American collector and printing magnate Robert Hoe (1839-1909), the founding President of the Grolier Club. The Divina proportione is one of the most remarkable illustrated books published in the sixteenth century. In it, the author sets forth a way of describing the visible world in terms of its common geometrical elements, what he calls the "divine proportion." Based on the writings of Plato, Euclid, and Vitruvius, and arguing his thesis by means of exegesis and the generous use of evocative illustration, Pacioli claims that this proportional element is shared by a variety of solid bodies, from human anatomy to architectural forms and even to the composition of the letter forms in the Roman alphabet. The work treats stereometry & related subjects and includes 61 remarkable illustrations by Leonardo da Vinci, which form the earliest work from the artist's hand to appear in print. "Pacioli formed a close relationship with Leonardo da Vinci when both were at the court of Lodovico il Moro in Milan. Pacioli's treatises and Leonardo's notebooks testify to their association. Pacioli knew Leonardo's work during this period in great detail," and he acknowledges that Leonardo was responsible for the designs of stereometric bodies appended to the Divina proportione. -Daly, Piero della Francesca's Mathematical Texts, p. 5. According to Marinoni, Leonardo studied Euclid under the tutelage of Pacioli in order to acquire "some deeper knowledge of geometry before undertaking the splendid drawings of solid bodies" for his book. Description:
London : Awnsham Churchill, 1682 A good copy of the 1st edition in later full leather binding with frontispiece and 23 full page plates, of which 10 are folding. Leybourn's first work on Dialing was published in 1669; it's popularity (particularly given the use of sun-dials and astrolabes by the navy at that time) led to this expanded folio version, funded by subscription. William Leybourn was a leading practical mathematician and authored a number of works on surveying, Gunter's Line and measuring tables. This copy has been rebound fairly recently in a full pigskin binding with raised bands and title and author labels. New endpapers have been added, and the frontispiece relaid and repaired (there was loss to the side edge and a little damage to the portrait). Contents with title page; To the Reader 3pp; Contents of the Tractates [the work is arranged in 11 sections or Tractates] 4pp; errata 1p; Introduction 12pp; text with plates, tables and diagrams 330 pp; finis; final blank. Description:
1756 PHYSICS Experiments Dutch Musschenbroek Isaac NEWTON Science MAP CaliforniaPieter van Musschenbroek was an 18th-century Dutch scientist known for his numerous physics experiments. He extensively studied the work of Isaac Newton, attended his lectures, and developed many of his own hypotheses based on those of Newton. His experiments were illustrated and thoroughly described in his book 'Experimental and Mathematical Physics'. This 1756 edition includes impressive engravings showing the details of his experiments on hydraulics, mechanics, optics, and navigation!
According to the 'Daumas Historical Science',
"Underlying Musschenbroek's lectures demonstrated with experiments was the experimental philosophy. The principal source of inspiration was Newton, but Galileo, Torricelli, Huygens, Réaumur, and others were important to this school."
This tome includes the oft-lacking folding map of the world which features California as an island!

1534 1ed Apian Instrumentum Astronomy Mathematics Alchemy Durer ART TrigonometryPeter Apian was a 16th-century humanist who is remembered for his studies in astronomy and mathematics. One of his best known works was his 1534 mathematics treatise 'Instrumentum Primi Mobilis'. This book was Apian's studies in trigonometry, and, according to Tomash & Williams,
"Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power."
This 1534 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It contains the expected sine charts as well as numerous woodcut illustrations depicting protractor and arc readings. Note that this incredible work includes the original title page, which features a woodcut after Albrecht Durer.

However, in addition to his studies in mathematics, he published one of the best works on surveying. 'Methode de Lever Les Plans' is an important book on how to create maps and survey land both with and without technical instruments. Ozanam covers how to find the best location for mapping a location, how to use necessary tools, and how to use geometry to create plans of castles and forts!

Discounted for final fair hours!San Jose, CA: Billiken Press, 1971. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
